The Art & Science of Drawing

Drawing is not a talent. It’s a skill anyone can learn. Designed for aspiring painters, graphic designers, illustrators and artists of all types, The Art & Science of Drawing series will teach you the foundation of art and design of all kinds: drawing.

The Art & Science of Drawing is a remarkable program that will teach you how to draw one day at a time. The program is simple, each day you’ll watch one video lesson that will introduce an essential drawing skill, and then do the recommended practice. The Art & Science of Drawing is overflowing with powerful insights into the drawing process and offers some of the clearest, most accessible drawing instruction available.  Many of the tools and techniques you'll learn here are rarely seen outside of private art academies.

Here’s how it works:

Each day you’ll watch one video lesson that will teach you an essential drawing skill. At the end of each lesson you’ll be given a project designed to build your drawing skills quickly and efficiently. After doing the project, you’re ready for the next day’s lesson and project! For people moving through the course at the daily pace this is a 2 month program. Students are encouraged to repeat lessons until they feel comfortable with the skills introduced, so many students take longer than a week to complete some of the modules.

The series includes the following courses:

Basic Skills is the first course in the series and will teach you the basics of drawing one day at a time.  (15 videos. 4.5 hours)

Dynamic Mark Making: In this course you’ll learn to bring your drawings to life with dynamic and engaging mark making. (6 videos. 1.5 hours)

Form & Space: In this course you’ll learn to draw in three dimensions, giving your drawings a dramatic sense of volumes and deep space. (11 videos. 2.75 hours)

Measuring & Proportion: In this course you’ll learn how to draw using a series of measuring tools and strategies that will take the guesswork our of the drawing process. (6 videos.1.5 hours)

Contours: In this course you’ll learn to draw complex, volumetric form using three kinds of contour lines. By the end of this course, you’ll understand how to combine different kinds of contour lines to dynamically draw any form.  You’ll even learn foreshortening, one of the most sought after drawing skills. (6 videos. 1.5 hours)

Shading Fundamentals: In this course you’ll learn how to draw with dramatic light and shadow. By understanding how light operates on the fundamental volumes like the sphere, cylinder and cube, you’ll be able to realistically shade basic forms and be prepared to draw and shade more complex subjects. (6 videos. 1.5 hours)

Shading Beyond the Basics: If you can shade a sphere, a cube and a cylinder, you can learn to shade anything, no matter how complex.  This course will show you how.  (6 videos. 1.75 hours)

After completing The Art & Science of Drawing many students enjoy taking on the challenge of learning figure drawing with The Art & Science of Figure Drawing.

What People Are Saying:

I've been looking for a good fundamentals drawing course for a while now and I can confidently say that I have found it. I have some background in drawing but needed to work on my fundamentals and this class was an excellent tool. I've been practicing for a while now and this class really improved all aspects of my drawing, taught me so many new things like pencil holding, arm movement, learning to see the angles, drawing forms in relation to one another. Brent is a great teacher and this method really worked for me. Thank you very much and I can't wait to start the other classes as well!

This is the best video based drawing course on the internet. (That I've seen - and I've seen a lot.) In this class you'll learn how to hold a pencil to draw light lines and how to break up complex forms into simpler ones. As a stand alone the class is nice enough as is, but it really shines as the intro to a whole series (all found here). This is where I'd start my art education, if I had to redo it all from scratch. (As is, there's still plenty to learn and relearn for intermediate artists, and I do these exercises every time I start using a new drawing implement/tool.) Anyways, thank you for the great class!

These lessons are great for beginners. I knew nothing about drawing about a year ago when I first started taking these classes. I have gained a lot of confidence and skills. If you are looking for a great place to learn drawing from the basics, look no further.
