This body of work takes inspiration from Béla Bartók’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle (1911).  Charles Perrault’s original fairytale was written in the late 17th century, a time when Europe was transitioning from a medieval worldview to the Age of Enlightenment.  As culture and technology progressed, biological evolution has not been able to keep up leaving us to grapple with ever more inspiring and dangerous ideas and technologies with an antediluvian brain.

Instead of presenting the narrative of Perrault’s fairytale, the Bartok opera is a flight through Bluebeard’s psyche.  The entire opera takes place within the wet walls of Bluebeard’s castle, inside his head, as his new wife Judith reveals the contents of the seven doors of his mind.

Each door reveals a different aspect of Bluebeard's psychology:

Door I - The Torture Chamber

Door II - The Armory

Door III - The Treasury

Door IV- The Secret Garden

Door V - Bluebeard's Kingdom

Door VI - The Lake of Tears

Door VII- Bluebeard's Wives

Instead of trying to illustrate the narrative of the opera, Eviston created a series of images dealing with the elements of Bluebeard’s identity.  When combined they create a psychological portrait of Bluebeard and explore how this mindset operates in contemporary society.
