Brent Noel Eviston giving a lecture at his exhibition Contemplations on How We Believe @ Piante Gallery in Eureka, CA, 2015

Drawing has always been Brent Noel Eviston’s passion as well as his primary medium of expression.  After attending Otis College of Art and Design, he has continued to study many forms of drawing including traditional master draftsmanship, anatomical drawing and conceptual drawing.  His current work, while rooted in traditional drawing techniques, has expanded to include contemporary practices and concepts explored through sculpture, animation, printmaking, writing and music composition.

Eviston’s multidisciplinary body of work investigates the cognitive tools people use to determine their beliefs.  These cognitive tools include logic, emotion, metaphor, allegory, memory, skepticism and superstition.  Eviston uses imagery and text drawn from history, science, politics, relationships and religion; common forums people explore while formalizing their belief systems.  Brent’s work explores not only what people believe, but how they come to believe it.

Eviston is also a passionate drawing instructor and advocate who has taught traditional and contemporary drawing through arts institutions and organizations throughout California.  In October, 2015 Eviston founded Evolution Academy for the Arts, a dynamic atelier style studio school that fuses classical techniques with contemporary practices. He recently completed filming a comprehensive video on figure drawing for Artists Network through F+W Media, one of the most prominent publishers of art instructional resources in the country.

In 2014 Eviston collaborated with award winning animator Steven Vander Meer to create Kinetic Convergences, a meditative loop of morphing drawings. This project led to his inclusion in Artists who Animate (AwA) a group of Northern California artists and filmmakers who merge fine art and animation. AwA is currently preparing for a 2018 exhibition at the Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka, CA.

Eviston's work has been exhibited throughout California.  Recently Kinetic Convergences was featured at the Front Range Film Festival in Colorado and work from his Bluebeard's Castle series was chosen to promote a production of Bela Bartok's opera of the same name at the Arcola Theater in London, England.

Eviston lives and works in Arcata located on California's extreme North Coast.
